10 Things I Love About The Holidays

Oh, I just love the holiday season! It’s a time to reflect, but it’s also a time to make some fun memories with those we hold dear. Whether you choose to spend it with family, or friends, it is the perfect time to embrace loved ones, and share in tradition. In this post, I’m going to highlight some of the reasons that I love this time of year.

#1 Cutting Down The Christmas Tree

Growing up, my family always had an artificial tree. It wasn’t until I met my soon to be husband that I was able to get a real one! This tradition has quickly become one of my holiday favorites. Plus, it gives me an excuse to get decked out in Carhartt from head to toe, and venture out into the cold to find the best tree on the lot!

#2 Taking a Sauna

Coming from a long line of Finlanders, my childhood home has had a sauna for as long I can remember. It’s my favorite way to relax during the holidays. It’s great for circulation, clearing out your pores, and most of all, easing your mind. Trust me, there is nothing better than taking a nice long sauna; and if you get too hot you can always jump in the lake! (or snow bank).

#3 Putting Up Decorations

I’m one of those people that would put up Christmas lights in September if I could (but my neighbors might think I’m crazy!) So it’s no surprise that decorating for the holidays is number three on this list. Every year I try to find new, creative ways to transform our house into a winter wonderland. It’s kind of like a fun little competition I have against myself, and it’s the perfect time to utilize those DIY posts I pinned from the year before!

#4 Christmas Movie Marathons

Not gonna lie, I totally watched National Lampoon’s Christmas vacation like 6 times before it was even December. It’s one of my favorite movies! Some of the movies I like to indulge in during the holidays are, White Christmas, The Santa Clause movies (gotta love Tim Allen), Scrooged, The Polar Express, and Elf. Bonus points if you wear christmas pjs, and drink hot cocoa (with peppermint schnapps) while watching.

#5 Building An Outdoor Ice Rink

Playing hockey was a huge part of my childhood, and where there’s hockey, there’s ice. My dad and I managed to build an outdoor rink a few times (when the weather allowed it), and I also had some friends who would go ALL OUT and build boards, paint the lines, and even splurge on actual nets. It’s really special having your own private rink to skate on. A lot of great memories were made playing drop-in on homemade rinks, and it’s still one of my favorite winter activities today.

#6 Boozy Holiday Cocktails

Full disclosure, I LOVE COCKTAILS, especially if they’re holiday themed. If you’re looking to embrace your heritage this holiday season, whipping up a family drink recipe just might do the trick. My fiancé’s Dad made homemade egg nog this year, using an old recipe, and boy was it delicious! You could also incorporate your favorite recipes into gifts by making DIY cocktail kits!

#7 Juustoa, and Pannu Kakku

If I had to pick two foods that define my holiday season, they would have to be Finnish Squeaky Cheese (Juustoa), and Oven Pancake (Pannu Kakku). My Grandma Kay, and Aunt Bertha used to make these recipes during Christmas time, and just one bite of squeaky cheese can transport me back to family gatherings at the Alto Family farm.

#8 Handmade Christmas Cards

My eighth favorite thing about this time of year, is making Christmas cards. My fiancé’s parents still have the card I made from two years ago sitting on their book shelf, and the fact that they keep it on display year round makes me smile. It’s the gift that keeps on giving! I have so much fun making something I know my loved ones will cherish forever, plus it’s super fun to get creative with glitter glue, and gel pens.

#9 Wrapping Presents

I’ll be honest, I used to SUCK at wrapping presents but “practice makes perfect” as they say, and this year I finally managed to figure out how to get those perfect creases, so that my presents aren’t covered in wrinkles! There’s just something so oddly satisfying about about a flawlessly wrapped present with a pretty color coordinated gift bow on top.

#10 Making New Traditions!

There are so many different ways to celebrate the holidays, and I’d love to hear how you celebrate yours! Please share your favorite winter activity, or holiday tradition in the comments below. I can’t wait to read them! (:
